Cleanup Underway After Tanker Truck Accident On Route 28 Causes Fuel Spill

SHARPSBURG, PA – Crews have been working at the scene of a truck accident that caused a major fuel spill in Sharpsburg on Tuesday afternoon, CBS Pittsburgh reports.

The incident took place in the southbound lanes of Route 28, where a tanker truck struck a barrier and rolled onto its side at about 5:15 p.m.

The wreck, which occurred near the Etna/Butler exit, caused a spill of an estimated 2,200 to 2,500 gallons of diesel fuel, much of which ended up in nearby Pine Creek.    The truck driver sustained injuries that were not serious.

Route 28 south was shut down for over eight hours before reopening early Wednesday morning.

Police, first responders, and emergency workers were joined at the scene by the Department of Environmental Protection, in efforts to contain the spill and prevent fuel from leaking into the Allegheny River.

Pennsylvania State Police troopers from the Kittanning barracks are investigating the cause of the accident.
