DUI Suspect Arrested After Pair of Crashes Near Gas Station in South Side Flats

PITTSBURGH, PA – Multiple agencies were called to the scene of a crash and subsequent fire late last Friday, October 4, in southeast Pittsburgh, according to the City of Pittsburgh Public Safety Blotter.

Officials said the incidents unfolded at the Coen gas station located near Carson Street and 24th Street. Local police, firefighters and EMS personnel responded to the area at around 11:20 p.m.

A male driver is believed to have been heavily intoxicated by drugs and/or alcohol when he first crashed his vehicle into another car in an alley behind the business. While the driver of the struck vehicle was not reported hurt, the suspect fled the scene and went on to crash his vehicle into a gas pump at the station. The impact caused a fire that was later extinguished by fire crews.

Following the second crash, the suspect got out of his vehicle and engaged in a physical struggle with responding officers before he was arrested and taken to a hospital to be evaluated.

One officer suffered an injury to his hand and had to seek out treatment at a nearby hospital.
