Motorcyclist Dies Following Crash With Car in Dormont, Driver Arrested

ALLEGHENY COUNTY, PA – A 23-year-old Dormont resident lost their life late last Saturday, September 21, when their motorcycle collided with another vehicle on Pioneer Avenue, according to TRIBLive.

The wreck took place at the intersection with West Liberty Avenue at about 10:45 p.m.

Allegheny County officials said a 25-year-old Etna resident was operating a Ford Taurus northbound on West Liberty when the car hit the motorcyclist, who was waiting at a red light. The impact sent the bike into the southbound lane, pushing the rider off and onto the roadway. An early investigation indicates the rider had hit the windshield of the Taurus during the crash.

Surveillance footage recovered near the scene shows a man and a woman getting out of the Taurus with two young children and then leaving the scene on foot. Investigators said the license plate on the Taurus is not the one issued to the vehicle.

The driver of the Taurus told investigators that the car had started smoking after having been hit by another vehicle, which allegedly prompted them him to leave the site with his family. However, police observed that the driver of the Taurus had failed to render aid or call for help after spotting the motorcyclist lying in the roadway. The surveillance footage also shows that the defendant neglected to use his brakes prior to the crash.

Officials said the defendant, who was booked into the Allegheny County jail and was denied bail, is expected to appear at a preliminary hearing on October 4.
